Is Drinking Ice Water Good?

Written By Kaustubhi BS (Grade 10)

With the onset of summer 1and temperatures reaching great heights, the urge for a refreshing glass of ice-cold water is undeniable. However, it is very important to think twice before we consume anything. Ice-cold water might look like a full meal to a beggar, but it has its own pros and cons. Even Ayurvedic texts favour warm or room-temperature water over cold water.

Cons of drinking ice cold water: drinking ice cold water leads to an increase in mucus production, which can exacerbate “flu and cold” symptoms because cold water causes blood vessels in the nose and throat to constrict, leading to a decrease in blood flow and a decrease in the ability of the immune system to fight against infections. The constriction of the blood vessels due to the cold water slows down the process of digestion, which results in cramps, bloating, constipation, and many other health issues. It also causes achalasia, which is a condition in which the nerves of the oesophagus get damaged, causing problems for food to pass through it. It also triggers migraines.

Ice-cold water has its own advantages, too. It helps in reducing weight; it can replace your coffee and is also used as a post-workout drink.

The solution to all the problems and confusions is to switch ice-cold water with water stored in a mud pot (matka water). It is as cool as ice water, but gentle on your throat. It prevents sunstroke, boosts metabolism, and is great for your skin. The best of all the benefits is that it causes no health issues and instead works for the betterment of your health.

It is not only good for your health; it also helps the poor potters. With the arrival of many factories for steel, copper, and iron containers, people have forgotten the benefits of pots, which has brought a huge loss in income for the potters.

There’s always a reason behind the actions of our elders. Studies show that the health of the previous generations was better when compared to the present generation, and one of the reasons why was the consumption of matka water. Let’s respect the ideas of our elders and say no to ice water and yes to matka water.
