Le Tour Eiffel

Written By Tanmayee Taparia (Grade 5)

Till recently I used to live in the south of France with my parents. Once our family went to tour Paris which is about 1000 kilometres from where we lived. Paris is a beautiful city with marvellous art & architecture all around. The Eiffel Tower is the grandest of them all. It was a bright sunny day when the time came for us to see & climb this magnificent piece of architecture. The tower is a gigantic iron structure standing on four huge pillars. People admire the beauty of the Eiffel tower from different corners of Paris, from distance as well as from proximity. The Eiffel tower looked as beautiful and Grande from near as from far in the clear skies of late spring/ early summer daytime of Paris. I still remember the wonderful lighting that lit the tower at night. A sight to behold!

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most visited monuments in the world. It was made for the universal exhibition of 1889. Even our own Gandhiji visited the tower during this fair. The tower was designed by the company of French civil engineer Gustave Eiffel. Until 1930 it was the tallest man-made structure in the world. The tower has been used for radio antenna installation, for wireless telegraph transmission and it has also served as a scientific laboratory. Its value today is 400 billion Euros. The tower has 3 floors with 1665 steps, many elevators, restaurants, a theatre, a post office and even a small apartment that belonged to Mr Eiffel. The effervescent yet calm and soothing views of the Paris City & its surroundings from the top floors of the tower make for a mesmerizing sight.

My father recounted to me an interesting story about the Eiffel Tower. He told me that the tower was initially built for only twenty years and then it was to be destroyed. That the tower was initially disliked by some and liked by a few. But with time the tower has gone on to become a global icon. My father told me that the history of The Eiffel Tower teaches us that with time, with patience, with perseverance, we can attain the greatest heights, receive uncountable love and become the most valued & cherished. The vivid memories of Le Tour Eiffel will always be a part of all my beautiful souvenirs of childhood spent in France.
