The Iran-Israel Conflict: will the global community witness a WWIII?

Written By Darshan M (Grade 12)

The recent strike carried out by Iran against Israel has gathered immense attention due to its unprecedented nature. With a huge arsenal of over 300 drones and missiles, Iran managed to execute a direct strike on Israeli soil for the very first time. This important event greatly impacts the two nations involved and the wider global community, as it has profound political implications and strategic opinions across national boundaries. Let’s understand the complex web of political implications arising from this attack and analyze the subsequent reactions of various nations across the globe.

During the late hours of Saturday night, Israel was cautioned raid sirens ringing across the country. Civilians were urged to take cover as the sound of explosions echoed through the streets, signaling the activation of air defense systems. Interceptions were carried out in multiple locations throughout the country, as Israel and its allied forces successfully took down numerous drone and missile attacks before they could breach Israeli borders, illuminating the night sky with the interceptions of defensive Iron Dome. There is speculation that there has been an instance where a ballistic missile was intercepted and destroyed beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. The military escalation involved a total of nine countries, with missiles being launched from Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. These missiles were intercepted and brought down by the military forces of Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Jordan.

The attack against Israel can be seen as a clear and deliberate act that directly challenges the sovereignty of the Israeli nation. This hostile action signifies the beginning of a new phase in the ongoing and deep-rooted conflict between Iran and Israel. As this event unfolds, the entire international community is closely observing the potential consequences and fallout that may arise from Israel’s response to this Iranian aggression. How Israel chooses to react holds immense significance, as it has the power to either deter or empower other destabilizing forces in the region. An aggressive response from Israel could serve as a powerful reply to Iran. However, a weak reaction from Israel may question these destructive elements, allowing them to challenge regional stability further. It is important to recognize that the repercussions of Israel’s response extend beyond the immediate conflict, as it will undoubtedly impact the credibility and leadership of the Western world. The actions taken by Israel will serve as a test, determining whether the United States and its allies are willing and prepared to intervene in future conflicts, thereby shaping the perception of their commitment to global peace and stability.

The assault on Israel posed a significant threat not just to Israel’s autonomy, but also to the overall peace and security of the region. The United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Jordan joined forces to monitor the attack, successfully taking down approximately 70 to 80 drones. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reported that the US intercepted a significant number of missiles and drones aimed at Syria and Yemen. In response to the escalating tensions, the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session, during which Israel’s UN ambassador voiced apprehension about the growing military conflict in the area.

During the attack, which was carried out by a combination of 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles, and at least 110 ballistic missiles, according to Rear Adm Daniel Hagari, none of the missiles entered Israeli territory. The exact number of missiles that reached Israel is unclear, as we have not been able to confirm the figures provided by the military spokesman independently. The distance between Iran and Israel is approximately 1,000km (620 miles) across Iraq, Syria, and Jordan. Additionally, the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon claimed responsibility for launching two rounds of rockets at an Israeli military base in the Golan Heights, an area that Israel has annexed from Syria, despite lacking international recognition for this action.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Saudi Arabia has recently expressed its apprehension regarding the ongoing “military escalation” in the region. They have highlighted the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In a peculiar twist of fate, the common adversary of Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the United States is Iran. This has resulted in a unique triangle of mutual interest, wherein Israel seeks a reliable regional ally, the US is actively pushing for a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and Saudi Arabia wants a comprehensive security agreement with the United States. The recent attack on Israel has remarkably served as a tangible demonstration for the Saudis, illustrating the potential benefits and advantages that could be derived from establishing such a crucial security agreement with the US.

According to Rear Adm Hagari, a vast majority of the relentless attacks aimed at Israel were successfully intercepted, either outside its airspace or within the country itself. This impressive defensive feat included diverting all the drones, cruise missiles, and a significant portion of the ballistic missiles. The ballistic missiles, known for their high-speed arcing trajectory, were expertly neutralized using their momentum and the force of gravity. Notably, due to the long-distance origin of most of these missiles, Israel deployed its advanced F-35 stealth fighters to intercept and neutralize them effectively. The IDF proudly reported that out of the 30 cruise missiles launched by Iran, 25 were successfully shot down well before reaching Israeli territory.

The attack launched by Iran against Israel carries immense political significance and has far-reaching strategic implications that go beyond the territorial boundaries of these two nations. The global community is closely monitoring the fallout arising from Israel’s response to this Iranian aggression, and the decisions made in the aftermath will shape the narrative surrounding this event, determining whether it will be remembered as a tragic incident or a potential catalyst for positive transformation. This attack not only represents a turning point in the enduring conflict between Iran and Israel but also raises troubling concerns regarding the potential abuse of international law to undermine the sovereignty and political autonomy of nations.
