Written By Sumati Varma (Grade 10)

When did I suddenly grow?
Why did I think that time was ever so slow?

What happened to the little girl jumping around?
When did she suddenly worry about becoming a let down?
Why did she suddenly worry about gaining a single pound?

Why did the ever so big smile on her face fade?
Of when did she become so very afraid?
In the end, only one answer her mind displayed.

The answer was them, the answer was they,
They who turned the brightest ray of sunshine gray,
They who led the little girl astray.

They tried to make her fit in,
Fit in a society that snatched her smile without even leaving a grin,
Fit in a society, where her happiness was a sin,
One that made her regret who she had been

Hi, I’m Sumati Varma and I’m a 14 year old ambivert. I have a soft spot when it comes to art, especially poetry and highly respect authors. My poetry usually comes from the darker, deeper aspect of life. My thought process and writings come from people who are suffering or are in pain but can’t find the words to express themselves. So I thought maybe I can do it for them.
